How I've Been Hustling (Since I Quit My Job)

This is probably the number one question on everyone's mind when someone resigns from their job and doesn't rush out to begin submitting resumés: How in the world are they supporting themselves?

Enter: Technology!

Apps these days can actually make you money! Aside from ubering, freelance writing, getting my real estate license, and applying for writing jobs, I was looking for more quick cash. I found them through searching for money-making apps.

Happy Hustling!

Get Moving to Get Paid

Did you know you can get paid for activity and work outs?

1. Download the Walgreens app, add your balance rewards number, and connect it to your Runkeeper (or their other connected apps) to get extra Balance Rewards points towards coupons in store and online!  No, you aren't getting paid cash, but you can earn your way faster to Walgreens Rewards. Not sold? Check out how to maximize coupons through Walgreens Rewards. I'm still learning but I hope to get to the point where I'm buying most of my beauty/hygiene products from Walgreens for FREE.

The Verdict: Shoot your shot!

2. Connect your FitBit to Sweatcoins. Sweatcoins runs automatically in the background of your phone. You don't even have to open the app- you earn "sweatcoins" based on how many steps you take per day. You then redeem those coins for giftcards or cash via paypal.

Granted, the coin-to-step ratio is low and some criticize that the app can eat up your battery or data. Connect it with apps to earn twice as many sweatcoins as you normally would. Also, take advantage of the free daily sc. My husband, who walks more than I do, has earned less than 20; I have over 70!

The Verdict: Shoot your shot!

3. Achievement is another app which runs in the background where you earn points based on activity level. The points-to-cash ratio seems lower than Sweatcoins, but again, you don't have to interact with the app to earn points and it connects to a whole slew of other apps to earn points faster.

The Verdict: Still dribbling.

Get Yourself a Gig!

Mystery shopping made easy.

4. Gigwalk is an app where you can earn modest sums by completing secret-shopper style tasks. So far, I have only completed one task. It went like this: I was asked to take pictures of the lobby and displays of an optical store and answer questions about the products. The entire process took about 10 minutes and it was within 5 miles of my home. It was a bit awkward- I figured out how to turn off the sound of my flash! But, before I woke up the next morning, there was already $10 sitting in my paypal.

Update: I currently have over $35 in my paypal account just from Gigwalk. This is by far the best app I have come across.

The Verdict: Shoot your shot!

5. Field Agent is very similar to Gigwalk, except some of the "jobs" allow you to scan a product if you already have it at home. In other words, you don't necessarily have to go to the store. It is different from Gigwalk in that it has a shorter completion period- usually about 2 hours. Basically, you have to not only be ready to go but also willing to go wherever. I also have a small complaint that sometimes the product simply isn't available at that store. And then, you don't get paid.

Still, I've barely used the app and already earned $20!

The Verdict: Shoot your shot!

6. Shopkick lets you earn points for scanning barcodes and sometimes just walking in! One major plus is that you don't have to take pictures of the products or stands- a lot more inconspicuous. It also offers extra points if you purchase the item. So far, I have only used it at the local drug stores and already, I've earned a $5 gift card.

The Verdict: Shoot your shot! Use my referral code: BLUE244858

Our New Motto: Never Pay Full Price!

Coupons have evolved. Perhaps one day I'll start buying the newspaper. Until then, online coupons it is! Search apps for your favorite grocery store, they probably offer digital coupons.

7. Ibotta is a rebate app which gives you cash back for groceries and other purchases. Look for the same coupons on retailer apps, like Kroger, to double up. I've gotten a few items "free "this way. Cash out once you get to $20

The Verdict: Shoot your shot!

8. Receipt Hog and Fetch both require you to take pictures of your receipts and verify purchases in order to win points. By scanning receipts from regular grocery trips, I've accumulated about 300 points on Receipt Hog (1000 points = $5) and 500 points from Fetch. Fetch works a little differently in that it offers only gift cards.

Verdict: Shoot your shot! Enter my Fetch Rewards Referral Code and get $2: F3MDU

9. Paribus detects receipts through your email and notifies you when a store owes you a refund. For example, most stores will refund the difference if the item goes on sale within a week of your purchase. Paribus tracks your emailed receipts for this purpose and charges a fee when you receive a refund. So far, it hasn't found anything for me but perhaps it's because I'm already paying the lowest price!

The Verdict: Still dribbling.

10. Honey and Invisible Hand are browser extensions which automatically search the web for coupon codes and competitive prices. Honey also syncs with amazon so I know I'm always getting the lowest price. Invisible hand automatically compares prices among websites- what a time saver!

The Verdict: Shoot your shot!

11. Dosh and Groupon offer cash back and discount deals at a variety of restaurants, retailers, and activities. We have discovered some new favorite restaurants in the area by taking advantage of cash-back deals. I just use the same card I linked with the app to pay for the meal and I get automatic cash back into my bank account.

The Verdict: Shoot your shot!

Do Basically Nothing

Slidejoy- this app places ads on your home lock screen. You slide the screen to unlock just like you usually would and earn "carats" which then convert into cash or gift cards. Some complain that the app eats up your battery and takes too long to achieve a pay-out. I'm going to keep trying the app and see how it affects my battery life. If it doesn't bother me too much, $3 a month for interacting with your phone like you normally would seems okay to me.

The Verdict: Still dribbling.

A Quick Pass: The Apps I Didn't Like

I'm not going to go into a ton of detail here. These are the apps I used and didn't like for one reason or another. I'm not into the apps where you can earn points for surveys, watching videos, etc. I also won't use apps which aren't user-friendly, have a poor format, or require tasks I don't like.

One Last Word: Passive Income is often used as an umbrella term to describe earning income without having to do very much. They're also easy ways to change your train of thought when it comes to consumerism and purchases. Try a few of them and you'll be surprised how much your frame of mind might change.
